How to Measure Speaker Parts for Replacement: Complete Guide
Why Accurate Measurements Matter
When ordering replacement speaker parts β whether for a single repair or a bulk B2B order β accurate measurements are essential. A voice coil that's 0.5mm too large won't fit in the magnetic gap. A surround that's 2mm too small won't reach the cone edge. Even dust caps need to be matched precisely to achieve the correct sound signature and aesthetics.
This guide covers how to measure every major replaceable speaker component using standard tools: a digital calliper (preferred), a steel ruler, and in some cases, a multimeter.
Measuring Voice Coils
The voice coil is specified by several dimensions:
**Voice Coil Diameter (VCD):** This is the INSIDE diameter of the voice coil former. Measure across the inside of the bobbin with callipers. Common sizes: 25mm, 25.5mm, 32mm, 38mm, 44mm, 50mm, 51mm, 65mm, 75mm, 100mm.
**Winding Height:** The total height of the wound wire on the former, measured from the bottom of the lowest winding to the top of the highest. This affects the coil's excursion capability.
**Total Height (Former Height):** The full length of the former tube, including unwound sections above and below the winding. This must match the motor structure's depth.
**Impedance:** Use a multimeter to measure the DC resistance (DCR). The rated impedance is typically 1.2β1.5Γ the DCR. For example, a coil with 6.2Ξ© DCR is likely rated at 8Ξ©.
**Lead-out Configuration:** Note the number of leads (2 for single VC, 4 for dual VC), their gauge, length, and attachment method (tinsel wire, solid wire, or flex leads).
Measuring Speaker Cones
Speaker cones require two primary measurements:
**Outer Diameter (OD):** Measure across the widest point of the cone, from the outer edge where it meets the surround. Do NOT include the surround in this measurement.
**Inner Diameter (ID) / Neck Diameter:** Measure the diameter of the cone's neck β the opening where it glues to the voice coil former. This must match the voice coil's outer diameter.
**Depth:** The distance from the cone's outer edge plane to the neck. This affects how the cone sits in the frame and interacts with the spider and surround.
Measuring Surrounds
Surrounds (foam or rubber) are specified by:
**Outer Diameter (OD):** The full outer diameter of the surround, including the flat mounting flange that glues to the frame.
**Inner Diameter (ID):** The inner diameter where the surround attaches to the cone edge.
**Roll Width:** The width of the roll (half-roll or full-roll) from the inner edge to the outer edge. This affects maximum excursion.
**Mounting Width:** The width of the flat flange area on both the inner and outer edges.
**Tip:** If replacing a deteriorated foam surround, measure the frame's surround mounting ledge (outer) and the cone's outer edge (inner) to determine the correct surround size.
Measuring Spiders
Spiders (centring devices) need:
**Outer Diameter (OD):** Measured across the full spider, including the flat mounting flange.
**Inner Diameter (ID) / Collar Diameter:** The opening that fits around the voice coil former. Must match the former's outer diameter.
**Number of Corrugations:** Count the concentric waves β more corrugations generally allow greater linear excursion.
**Height (at rest):** The distance from the mounting flange plane to the collar plane when the spider is at rest position.
Measuring Dust Caps
Dust caps are measured by:
**Diameter:** The outer diameter of the cap, measured at the base where it glues to the cone.
**Height / Profile:** The depth of the dome from its base to its peak. Taller domes generally radiate more high-frequency energy.
**Material:** Note whether the original is paper, felt, aluminium, plastic, or screen mesh, as this affects both sound and aesthetics.
